SIRDC’s mandate is to carry out strategic research and development (R & D) for the benefit of the manufacturing, service, agricultural and mining sectors of Zimbabwe as well as to commercialize R & D outputs.

SIRDC comprises twelve institutes whose activities can be grouped broadly to cover biotechnology, electronics, energy technology, environment and remote sensing, building construction, material science, metallurgy, information and communication technology, and metrology.
